What We Do

The Blowing Rock Garden Club has been around since bees learned how to pollinate flowers... well, really just since 1967, but we think that's saying a lot!

Our focus and projects change over the years to reflect membership interest and involvement, but through all the changes our main service project is caring for the Blowing Rock Memorial Gardens. Those are the lovely jaw dropping gardens (if we do say so ourselves) that run along the front of Sunset Park in downtown Blowing Rock.

In addition to the following current and developing projects, we offer a variety of other fun ways you can plug into our community including:

Current and Developing Projects

Besides caring for the Blowing Rock Memorial Gardens, which is our main service project, we have other projects that are in various stages of development. Please reach out if you are interested in learning more or getting involved in any of these programs!

Blowing Rock Memorial Gardens

Caring for the Memorial Garden is a huge responsibility as these are the large glorious gardens along the front and left side of the park for which the town is so well known. This year we have workdays on Mondays at 5:30 pm and Thursdays at 8:30 am.  All are welcome. From light deadheading to deep digging, there is plenty for all abilities and skill levels.  Garden volunteers can join one of our crews or come when you can. Just bring some clippers and a bucket or a spade and we'll show you what needs doing!  Please contact our current horticulture chair, Evenlight Eagles, if you are interested in volunteering, donating to or otherwise supporting this project.

Supporting the Town
of Blowing Rock

From time to time the town will ask for our assistance with specific projects.  Examples include cleaning up the Annie Cannon Memorial Gardens, planting the garden areas coming into Blowing Rock, planting the planters along the sidewalk in the spring and weeding in some of the town gardens.  Please contact our current horticulture chair, Evenlight Eagles, if you are interested in volunteering, donating to or otherwise supporting this project.

Local Litter Pick Up

Members of the garden club are encouraged to participate in the yearly town clean up and we have also organized other local litter clean ups. If you would like to get involved in organizing or just want to spend a couple of hours one day picking up some clutter with some friends and neighbors, please contact our current president, for more info!

Native Plant Project with Blowing Rock Elementary

We are working with parent volunteers at Blowing Rock Elementary to create a plan to bring more native perennial and pollinator plants into the school landscape.  What a great way for kids to learn about science! Please contact our current horticulture chair, Evenlight Eagles, if you are interested in volunteering, donating to or otherwise supporting this project.

Native Plant Project

We are working on projects to bring more native perennials into both cultivated and wild areas of our local landscape in order to support a healthy local ecosystem.  Please join us or you can donate to the garden club to support this up and coming project as we:

  • learn to propagate native perennials for the town landscape as well as our own gardens

  • grow our knowledge of the native plants and pollinators of Southern Appalachia

  • create a plan to incorporate these plants into the local landscape... identifying the right plants for the right gardens and wild spaces that belong to the town

  • actually do the work of planting these lovely flowers in their various new homes!!!

  • educate and network with local organizations and business owners to identify areas where they may be inspired to add native perennials

Please contact our current horticulture chair, Evenlight Eagles, if you are interested in volunteering, donating to or otherwise supporting this project.
