Arborcrest Garden Tour

Boone, NC

Description: Arborcrest Gardens is a 25-acre ornamental plant evaluation garden located in Boone, NC. They grow and evaluate over 13,000 different species and cultivars of trees, shrubs, perennials, ground covers, and bulbs. They also maintain a large vegetable/fruit test garden.  Dr. Stanley, owner, will be available to talk with the guests and describe the vegetable test gardens. There are two open air golf cart tours to choose from. Limit 10 members per tour so make your reservations now.

Time and Transportation: There is a tour at 10 and a tour at 11:15. For members who would like to carpool, meet at the Rumple Memorial Presbyterian Church or you can meet us at the property in Boone. RESERVATIONS REQUIRED

Blueberry Picking in Lansing

Friday, July 9th

Open to: Members and Guests

Cost: None to attend. $10 per gallon of “you pick” berries.

Description: Tour and picking of blueberries. Old Orchard Creek is a historic Appalachian mountain farm in Lansing, NC, raising blueberries using sustainable farming practices. Blueberries are usually available from late June to early August, and they have other goodies for sale. They are open 7 days a week, 8 AM – 6 PM. Come visit and enjoy hiking, stargazing, magnificent views, in-season blueberry picking, or simply rocking on the front porch. Their cabins are available for rental all year.

Linville Falls Winery

August 13, Friday

Open to: Members and Guests

Cost: Entrance is Free /Tour is $10

Description: Stroll the grounds of the winery, enjoy a glass or flight of wines and a snack, and listen to music.  Last year they had tons of sunflowers, and the year before that they grew tomato plants.  We will see what they have growing this year. Buying lunch is optional.  Wine by the glass is $6+.  Flight of 4 wines is $12.  Other beverages available. Music and lunch is available Friday, Saturday & Sunday. Rascal Jack’s Sandwich Shack is open 12 noon to 6 pm. Live Music: Hogan’s Heroes from 3-6 pm.

Apple Picking, Cider Making

and Plant Exchange

Sunday, September 26

Open to: Members Only

Cost: None


Description: Join us at the Steele Apple Orchard to pick apples and make cider. Bring a container to take home some fresh cider.  There will be plenty to share and taste test.  The flavor is amazingly delicious. 


Also this will be the beginning of our ANNUAL PLANT EXCHANGE- for members only…From our gardens to yours!!! This will give us a chance to pass along our plants among friends, so start collecting pots for dividing any plants you would like to share. There will be a program on dividing plants at the August meeting in preparation for this event.


Time & Transportation: 12 noon until 4pm.  Drive to the site or arrange carpooling individually

New River Corn Maze

Sunday, October 10

Open to: Members and Guests

Cost: Admission Free.  Corn Maze $7 adults, $5 for students/children. Fee charged for Tram Rides if available this year.


Description: A great fall activity!  Relax by the charming New River, stroll the pumpkin patch, or walk and perhaps get lost in the mile-long the corn maze (fee charged), have a picnic by the New River and take home a pumpkin or two.  This field trip would also be appropriate for children or grandchildren.  Snag a wagon, walk the pumpkin patch, and haul some pumpkins home in time for Halloween. 

Participants are asked to bring a dish to share. 

Pick Your Own Pumpkin Patch:  An array of varieties, sizes, and colors from typical Jack-O-Lantern's to Giant Pumpkins to heirloom pumpkins. Including the tried and true Jarrahdale Pumpkin for the best pies!!  Both edible and ornamental options to choose from!

Time & Transportation:  12 noon. Brown Family Farm, off Highway 421, GPS address is 660 Laurel Gap Ridge Road.  Arrange carpooling at your discretion.
